De gewone Judasboom (Cercis canadensis) is een middelgrote boom of grote struik die opvalt door zijn vroege bloei en sierlijke hartvormige bladeren. In het vroege voorjaar, nog voordat het blad verschijnt, bloeit hij rijkelijk met kleine, roze tot paarse bloemetjes die direct op de stam en takken groeien. Dit maakt de boom een echte blikvanger in de tuin.

Het blad is hartvormig en frisgroen in de zomer, met een mooie gele herfstverkleuring. De boom bereikt doorgaans een hoogte van 5 tot 8 meter en vormt een brede, sierlijke kroon, vaak meerstammig.

Bodemeisen Cercis Canadensis

Deze Gewone Judasboom 'Cercis canadensis' groeit het best op een zonnige tot halfbeschaduwde plek in goed doorlatende, humusrijke grond. Hij verdraagt droogte redelijk goed en is beter winterhard dan zijn mediterrane tegenhanger, Cercis siliquastrum. Dit maakt hem geschikt voor gematigde klimaten waar koude winters voorkomen. Daarnaast is hij geliefd bij bijen en vlinders door zijn nectarrijke bloemen, waardoor hij ook bijdraagt aan de biodiversiteit in de tuin.

Verschil met Cercis siliquastrum

Cercis canadensis komt uit Noord-Amerika, terwijl Cercis siliquastrum (de zuidelijke Judasboom) uit het Middellandse Zeegebied komt. Cercis canadensis is beter winterhard dan Cercis siliquastrum. Cercis siliquastrum heeft vaak een meer grillige groei, terwijl Cercis canadensis een compactere, dichtere kroon kan ontwikkelen.

Not Quite So Durable...

Maybe I have a SUPER aggressive chewer...he went through this ball in under a week. I originally bought the ball because of a review that stated the owner's Pitbull had the same ball for two years; not so much for my Rottweiler. He started chewing off and swallowing small crumbs from the ball within a day or two. By the end of the week, it was chunks so I had to toss it in the trash to prevent an intestinal obstruction. On the up side, my Rottweiler LOVED the ball while it lasted. However, I can't, in good conscience, give this ball a rave review based on this experience. Please take this review with a grain of salt as I have yet to find ANY toy that my boy won't DESTROY in a week or two. I hope that someone finds this informative when searching for chew toys for SUPER aggressive chewers like mine.

If you are looking for a ball that can stand up next to a heavy, aggressive chewer.. this is a good choice. Our Pitbull literally destroyed any and every toy that she gets with the exception of one kind of kong ball. She tore through the kong Frisbees, any kind of squeaker toy, and the wobble wag giggle ball (she usually always ends up destroying these but it takes a few weeks. Today she beat her record and had her brand new ball destroyed within the first 30 minutes of us taking it out of the box). But, this ball she has not been able to destroy. I'd like to believe that the Kong ball she has and this ball are made of the same material. Because they are the only balls she can't ruin. And it's not because of a lack of trying. We have watched her sit there and chew with a side of her mouth for an hour or more, trying to make some kind of indention or tear in it and it just never happened. She loves to chew this thing, chase this thing, sleep with this thing. I most certainly recommend this ball. If it is I'ah proof then it is most certainly, 100% a durable ball and worth every penny
