The paper became this and bumpy with all the layers of dried and cracked acrylic

and tried again

And I instantly saw the half formed shape of the reaper

And still I don’t know how I could improve on it

I’ve only ever read a few of Tolstoys works

There’s a whole genre of stories or of thinking about the dark underbelly of artistic skill

And in hindsight it may have been an early sign of questioning whether my own mask was just something I used to hide my depressions

As always the truth is far less spectacular than the tale
